Munich/Amsterdam, 5 December 2024. Season two of Beta Film’s acclaimed and beloved royal drama Maxima (12x1h, Millstreet Films/FBO/Beta Film) has started shooting in the Netherlands. The first picture of the second season shows Maxima and Willem-Alexander celebrating their first Queen’s Day together with the royal family, which is held each year in spring in honor of the current monarchs’ birthday. Beta Film sold the series to over 50 territories worldwide, most recently striking a deal with Japan’s public broadcaster NHK.

The second season follows Maxima from her wedding preparations up to the coronation ten years later, navigating her constant struggles between family dynamics and her personal ambitions. In addition, the new season introduces the viewer to more members of the Dutch royal family. Shooting will continue in the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, and Austria until spring 2025. Saskia Diesing and Joosje Duk return to direct, the scripts were written by Rifka Lodeizen and Daan Gielis.

Following the stellar premiere at Canneseries, the first season broke records in its home territory on RTL Netherlands’ streaming service Videoland, achieved superb ratings on Italy’s Rai, Denmark’s TV2, as well as Spain’s Atresmedia, and ranked in the Top10 on HBO’s streaming service MAX in Latin America for multiple weeks.

Delfina Chaves (The Secret of the Greco Family, Happy 6) and Martijn Lakemeier (The East, Marie Antoinette) reprise their roles as Maxima and Crown Prince Willem-Alexander, alongside Sebastian Koch (The Lives of Others, Your Honour) and Elsie de Brauw (The Death of My Mother) as Willem-Alexander’s parents Claus von Amsberg and Queen Beatrix. Bram Suijker (Nemesis) and Steef de Bot (King of the Skies) join the cast as Willem Alexander’s younger brothers Prince Friso and Prince Constantijn. Claire Bender (High Flyers) plays Princess Mabel and Abbey Hoes (The Neighbors) portrays Princess Laurentien.

Maxima is produced by Rachel van Bommel of Millstreet Films, in co-production with FBO and Beta Film, with the support of the Dutch Film Fund Production Incentive, the Creative Europe MEDIA program, and the Belgian Tax Shelter. The first season is based on the book “Máxima Zorreguieta: Motherland” by Marcia Luyten, published by De Bezige Bij. Beta Film handles international sales.
