Broadcast: Channel 4 returns to The Couple Next Door

Channel 4’s scintillating drama about a young couple’s friendship with their new neighbours is returning for a second run after becoming the broadcaster’s most popular scripted streaming launch ever.

The first series of the Eagle Eye produced drama aired in November 2023 and averaged 2.6m across its six part run after 28 days according to Barb data from overnights.tv. It had added more than 1m streams in the first seven days according to Channel 4.

The second series of the drama features a new story and leading cast, which includes Sam Palladio, Annabel Scholey, Aggy K Adams and Sendhil Ramamurthy. Hugh Dennis will return to the dark psychological drama.

Filming has now commenced on the second run in Belgium, with the series having been written by David Allison. It will be directed by Dries Vos.

Viewers will return to the claustrophobic world of the cul-de-sac, promising to explore the fallout of making fantasy a reality. This series, brilliant heart surgeon Charlotte Roberts (Scholey) and her husband, a consultant anaesthetist Jacob (Palladio) are a high-flying couple, but things turn upside down when their new hospital colleague Mia (Adams) rents out the house next door.

The series is loosely adapted from Scandi drama Fatal Injections made by Kamikaze Film CPH and distributed by Reinvent International Sales and the Dutch Format The Neighbours made by Millstreet Films on which series one was based.

Jo McGrath and Walter Iuzzolino serve as executive producers for Eagle Eye Drama and the producer is Jennifer Burnet. It was ordered by commissioning editor at Channel 4 Sarah Stack.

The Couple Next Door is being produced in association with Happy Duck Films and is supported by the Belgian Tax Shelter. Beta Film will internationally distribute the series.

Eagle Eye drama was recently acquired by ITV Studios, having been launched in 2018 by former Channel 4 commissioners Iuzzolino and McGrath.
